Hundreds of poisonous false widow spiders invaded a Royal Navy Airbase. Staff were on red alert after the creepy crawlies which are the size of a 50p and resemble the deadly black widow were spotted at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwall.
Workers on the site are wearing latex gloves because the spiders bite is as painful as a bee sting. Commander Richard Blackwell, in charge of logistics support said "The false widow webs are different to a normal house spiders and people noticed more of them around. There are hundreds. They particularly like the roof space where it is warm. We've sought advice on dealing with the problem. They could be hoovered out, heat treated or sprayed".
The spiders are often found in England but not so many, with only 30 recorded bites in the last 16 years. The alert comes after a colony of black widows was transported from California to an army base in Wattisahm Suffolk, in a crate of helicopter equipment. They were destroyed by a pest control team.
